Couponing 101 - Get Organized

Day 4 - Get Organized

Now that you have started gathering coupons you will need to get ORGANIZED! This is the most important part of your couponing wealth. You will become very discouraged if you are not properly organized. You will see when your start accumulating so many coupons.

There are so many different ways to organize your coupons. We list a few methods:

  • Binder Method - By catagory/By Week
  • File Method
  • Boxes
  • Coupon Organizer

Binder method - Category
This is to organize your coupons by category. We have compiled a list if you prefer not to make your own. Click here. We use baseball card holders which are found at Walmart up front where the baseball cards are located and sell for around $5.44. We insert coupons in the 9 pockets on each page. This way you can quickly see what the product is, expiration, and amount all in one look. This is more time consuming at home. You will spend less time at the grocery store but if you shop with children I find this the best method. The upside of this method is that you can quickly go through your coupons at the grocery store. This is our preferred method.

Binder method - Weekly
This organizes your coupons by each week. Each week you put a date on every page of the inserts and then pull inserts apart and group by page. Then put each page in it's own page protector. This method allows you to clip as you go at the grocery store. Most coupon sites tell you which coupon to use with the date it came out, so you will be able to go to that week and flip through the pages until you find the one you need. This method works for some, because you can clip as you go at the grocery store. So, once you put your product in the cart, you cut the corresponding coupons and put them in a separate envelope for checkout. Also, you may elect to go to the coupon list on Pinching your pennies(which gives you an alphabetical listing of the coupons in your state) so you can have a master list of your coupons. This will enable you to look through the list find what your looking for and then go to corresponding week to clip the coupon. This method is not time consuming at home but you will need to allow for additional time at the grocery store for clipping.

If you choose to use either Binder Method be sure to use a binder that has a zipper enclosure. You don't want to loose those valuable coupons.

File Method
This organizes your coupons by week in a file box. This is the least amount of time up front. You get the coupon inserts place the date on the first page and then place in a file labeled with that corresponding date. Most coupon sites tell you which coupon to use with the date it came out, so here you will be able to go to that week and flip through the pages until you find the one you need. This method works for some. You do not have any sorting or clipping coupons you probably won't use. Here, you may elect to go to the coupon list on Pinching your pennies(which gives you an alphabetical listing of the coupons in your state) so you can have a master list of your coupons. The downfall to this is the time to prepare to go to the store. With the binder methods, you are able to go to the store on a whim. (not that we recommend going on a whim....always prepare).

Boxes
You can use anything from a carry all file box, shoe box, recipe box. This method is good, because you can choose a size that will work for you. You can select a size that will accomodat
e what you want. Then, use tab dividers to separate your categories or separate by the weekand then cut, clip and sort your coupons within each category. Make sure each index divider is tabbed so you can mark the sections.

Coupon organizer
These are great when you are just starting out and not have alot of coupons. You can shove this in your purse and always have them when you need them. The downside is that it doesn't hold many coupons and will become cumbersome when you begin to accumulate more coupons. It is also hard to see what coupons you have and find it tough to flip through in the store.

As you can see there are many different ways to organize your coupons. The best way is to pick out what works for you. Please submit any different ways to organize your coupons that you have found works for you. We love the creativity and to see what you can do.

Couponing 101 - How and When To Use Coupons

Day 3 - How and When to Use Coupons

So- Every time I ask someone about clipping coupons I get the same answer ALL THE TIME, which goes something like this:

"I always try to clip the coupons from my (one) Sunday paper- and then I go do my regular shopping and it's cheaper to just buy the generic of the coupon that I have!"

"I clip the coupons and go buy things that I normally wouldn't buy and end up spending more money that I usually do."
SOUND FAMILIAR???

I used to think the same thing. Every other week, I would remember to clip my coupons and then I would take them to the store, hunt down the right product and size, and then do some math in my head and decide it's cheaper to buy the Walmart Generic. So I would grab the Walmart Generic and Toss the Coupon...

So sad.......

There are 3 important things you will need to know to be a successful "Couponer"

1. MATCHING COUPONS WITH AWESOME SALES and PROMOS!

  • For example- If I go to Walmart to use my $1 off 5 Campbell's Cream of Chicken Coupons, it will end up being cheaper to just buy generic. BUT, if you use the coupon when they are at a rock bottom price- or if you match it with a promotion one of the grocery store's is having then you have - Cheap Soup!

2. DOUBLE DAYS/SUPER DOUBLE DAYS/TRIPLE DAYS!

Double Days
  • Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods in Burlington run Doubles up to $.99 daily. This means if you have a coupon for $.75 they will deduct $1.50 off the price of that item.

  • K-Mart Doubles about once a month (not every month in Burlington, NC) They run their double promotion usually up to $2.00. This means if you have coupon for $2.00, they will deduct $4.00 off the price of that item. (Let me tell you.....FREE STUFF.....when they do this)

Keep in mind, Restrictions usually apply to how many coupons you can double, so you will need to check with each store's coupon policy.

Super Doubles/Triples
  • Harris Teeter ran for the first time last month Super Doubles. This is where they increased their minimum double amount up to $1.99. This means that if you have a coupon for $1.50 then they will deduct $3.00 off the price of an item.
  • Harris Teeter also usually runs every month Triples. They triple the amount of a coupon. This means that if you have a coupon for $.75 then they will deduct $2.25 off the price of an item.

3. Coupon Stacking (My Favorite)
Stacking simply means using 1 Manufacturer Coupon and 1 Store Coupon on 1 Item!!
The three places I found to benefit from this is:
  1. Walgreens store ad coupons
  2. Lowes Foods store ad coupons
  3. Target coupons

So, this is where using "Two Thrifty Moms" comes in... Use and abuse us to find all what the deals are and where to get them.

Most stores operate on a Sunday-Saturday Sale Cycle... So we will post a big match up for each store at the beginning of the week.

Food Lion, Lowes Foods, and Harris Teeter are on a Wednesday-Tuesday Sale Cycle and we usually have a coupon match up by Wednesday evening.

Don't be overwhelmed, it
will take a little while for you newbies(that's you guys) to figure out when something is a good deal. When I first started couponing, I found toothpaste for $1 a tube and I was so excited I thought I had scored an awesome deal - so of course, I used all the coupons I had for that item and bought about bought about 10 of them. Then as time went on, I realized that "you" can get free toothpaste all the time! So, $1 for toothpaste is really cheap for all our non-couponing friends) So don't feel bad too bad when you see a deal for less.

The best thing to do is start a list like this one!

OK, Ladies & Gentleman

Commitment!!!! Let's see it!!!!

Go here for the next session for today. Coupon Lingo

Coupon 101 - Coupon Lingo

Couponing 101 - Coupon Lingo
Ever seen something like this:

B1G1 w/$2/1 from B1G1 w/$2/1 from (3/15RP) & earn RR, then submit MIR (YMMV)

Yeah, confusing to me too!!!!!!!!!
Well, here is the breakdown:

It's crazy how ridiculous the code of couponers is.!!
Once you have mastered this lingo then its a breeze!!!!!
So to be successfull at this you will need a coupon glossary (go here for a copy of ours)
We suggest as long as you are a newbie the best thing to do is print it out for future reference. Don't worry, it won't take you that long to be speaking and reading the language of couponers!!!

Get paid for taking Surveys??Scam or the Real Deal

Everyone has heard it......get paid to take surveys.....Great money.......It's a scam

Well, I haven't found any good ones until now.

I signed up with Dollar Surveys and they will pay you $1 per survey via Paypal. I thought this was another hoax, where I sit and spend time doing surveys and have to wait until I got a specific amount built up in an account before I got paid. (That's how others work)

Well, Dollar Surveys are different. They are located in North Carolina and offer you $1 for every survey you take. On the following Monday they will deposit the money you received for completing their surveys in your paypal account. This is very convenient and you don't have to wait for a check in the mail.

Now, don't get too excited....This is not a program that you are going to be able to live off of. I have been doing this now for about 6 months and the most I have received in a week is about $20.00. To most of us that is not a lot, but to some good coupon clippers that is enough for groceries for a week.

So if you are still interested in this Survey program click the icon below and it will redirect you to their website to sign up.

Couponing 101 - Accumulate Coupons

Day 2 - Couponing 101 - Accumulating Coupons

If you missed Day 1, be sure to check it out here

Now that we have your attention and you have completed "Introduction - "The Thrifty Way"

You are ready for the second step:

Accumulate

Stock Yourself with all the coupons you nee
d to
Cash in on all These "Thrifty Deals"

The first step to doing that is getting the Sunday Newspaper.

You can elect to get multiple subscriptions or just pick a few up on Sunday. We have done this both ways. We personally like going and picking up papers at the news stands.

To subscribe:

The Times News
  • You can click here to subscribe online or call 336-227-0131
  • You can pick up the Sunday paper throughout the week at The Times News downtown Burlington located at 707 S Main St.
  • You can go inside and pick up the paper for previous weeks.

They keep the Sunday paper for a year.(No kidding, alot of paper)

Greensboro News & Record
  • You can click here or call 336-373-7000

The best way to succeed with couponing is to get multiple copies of the paper, We suggest 4-6+.
  • The reason for this is if you have a coupon that matches up with a sale to get the item for free, then you want to get as many of those items for free while you can instead of paying regular price for the particular item. So if you have 6 copies of the coupon then you will be able to get 6 items for cheap or even free.

Two other Sources of Coupons you need to familiarize yourself with is:

INTERNET PRINTABLES = IP's

Here are my favorite sources of IP's
Our Coupons.com Coupn Bar (located on the far right of our page)
Grocery Smarts
RedPlum
Pinching Your Pennies Forum
Target Printables
(you can stack these with manufacturer's coupons for even better deals)

Coupon Clipping Services - These are a few we recommend

Ebay (check out our link to the right that will link you to coupons)

Hurry $5 off $25 purchase

Hurry offer is only valid 7/16 - 7/17 Print yours today!!!

Looks like there is another $5 off $25 coupon from Walgreens. This is valid 7/16-7/17 only. Your total has to be $25 before taxes and after all coupons (manufacturer, Walgreens, and any other possible discount) Pretty silly if you ask me, but I guess you can use it for items that don't have coupons, or use it to get back RR. Any ideas?
